Role Overview

The Deputy MLRO will support the MLRO and Chief Compliance Officer in maintaining and enhancing the Bank’s compliance and financial crime control framework, with a particular focus on Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter-Terrorist Financing (CTF), and sanctions compliance.

 

This role requires strong technical knowledge and the ability to engage with stakeholders across all levels of the business.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate under the SMCR Certification Regime with responsibilities aligned to financial crime compliance.
  • Assist the MLRO in the effective design, implementation, and maintenance of the Bank’s financial crime and compliance frameworks.
  • Support the management of AML, CTF, and Sanctions compliance programs across the Bank.
  • Conduct reviews and investigations into unusual or suspicious activity and escalate findings as appropriate.
  • Draft, review, and submit Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Perform periodic enterprise-wide AML risk assessments and contribute to the preparation of the annual MLRO report.
  • Oversee client due diligence processes, including onboarding, periodic KYC reviews, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in relation to complex structures including corporate accounts, SPVs, and syndicated lending; apply Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) measures where appropriate.
  • Monitor and assess the impact of evolving UK sanctions regimes on the Bank’s business and client base.
  • Act as Deputy to the MLRO, including attending relevant forums and decision-making committees in their absence.
  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and maintaining compliance and financial crime policies and procedures in line with UK regulatory expectations.
  • Deliver AML and compliance training sessions and support wider staff awareness initiatives.
  • Support the preparation and coordination of regulatory inspections, internal audits, and external reviews.
  • Manage timely and accurate responses to regulatory enquiries and requests for information.
  • Provide day-to-day advisory support to front office and support functions on financial crime and compliance matters.
  • Contribute to regular and ad hoc management reporting relating to compliance and financial crime.
  • Undertake any other duties as directed by the Chief Compliance Officer and MLRO

 

Key Skill and Competencies:

  • Professional qualifications in Compliance or Financial Crime (e.g., ICA Advance certification, Diploma, ACAMS)
  • Strong technical knowledge of UK AML, CTF, and sanctions regulations and best practices.
  • Familiarity with corporate and complex structures such as SPVs and syndicated lending arrangements
  • Proven experience in conducting financial crime investigations and drafting SARs
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and report-writing skills
  • Ability to work independently

 

Required:

Previous Experience:

  • Degree holder
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Compliance or Financial Crime roles within a regulated financial institution.
